Improving the quality of life in our own back yard
One of the Foundation’s objectives is to benefit the communities in which we live and work. One way this is accomplished is through an initiative known in Urban Systems as the Backyard Project. The Backyard Project is aimed at heightening awareness amongst staff about local charitable organizations and the work they do in supporting disadvantaged people within the community. This project provides a forum for staff in each branch to come together to support and participate in various community-based activities with financial support from the Foundation. Each year branch teams prepare a proposal for one or more initiatives in which USL staff will be involved and for which some support funding is required. These proposals are advanced to the Foundation’s Board of Directors for endorsement.
Here are some of the things our people have been involved in through the backyard project:
- building playgrounds
- supporting camps and programs for children with special needs
- various projects sponsored by the local Boys and Girls clubs
- involvement with the Big Brothers / Big Sisters program
- community clean-up initiatives
