Stormwater Management
In recent years, the practice of urban hydrology and stormwater management has been rapidly changing and evolving. Where we had previously desired to remove runoff from properties as quickly as possible, we now see the wisdom of attempting to mimic the natural hydrologic cycle as closely as possible; where we had previously ignored the impact of runoff on nearby streams, we now see the wisdom of enhancing water quality and maintaining fish and wildlife habitat. By respecting this wisdom we are more likely to move through the 21st Century in a sustainable way, bequeathing to coming generations an urban environment that is ecologically thriving and aesthetically pleasing.
We, as stormwater professionals, integrate this wisdom into all aspects of stormwater management planning, design and construction. We pride ourselves on being able to provide technical excellence while understanding the relevance of our work within the “big picture” context. We strive to work collaboratively with our clients at all times, by actively listening to their needs and continuously adapting and evolving throughout a project life to deliver a product or service that often exceeds expectations.
Urban Systems’ fully integrated team of engineers, planners and landscape architects ensure that we deliver a comprehensive solution that accounts for all facets of a plan or design. While leading and growing in our own area of expertise, we also provide support services to our Land Development, Transportation and First Nations areas of practice.
Our stormwater professionals are recognized as experts in their field and were honored to receive a 2005 Consulting Engineers of BC Award for Engineering Excellence for the Duprez Ravine Stormwater Bypass project.
We utilize our extensive knowledge and experience to continue to lead the way in developing innovative, sustainable and pragmatic solutions for our clients. Our areas of practice include:
- Integrated Stormwater Management Planning and Master Drainage Planning
- Alternative Design Standards (including Alternate Street Design)
- Low Impact Development / Best Management Practices (including bioswales, wetlands, rain gardens, porous pavements)
- Stormwater Infrastructure Design (including storm sewers, culverts, detention ponds, dyking systems, pump stations)
- Hydrologic / Hydraulic Modeling
- Watercourse Enhancements (including bank protection and stream restoration)
- Problem Definition and Solution Development
- Construction Management
- Public Consultation and Education Strategies
